Do elbow sleeves help your bench press?
Walk into any gym and someone is pressing in neoprene elbow sleeves. Ask what they do and you will get two answers: they keep the joint warm, or they are basically cheating. Manufacturers rarely put a number on it, and gym forums guess. One controlled trial actually measured it, on both the bench press and the overhead press, so this page reports what it found and nothing more.
The short answer
In one controlled crossover trial of 20 resistance-trained adults, neoprene elbow sleeves produced a small but statistically significant increase in bench press and shoulder press one-rep max and in repetitions completed at 85% of one-rep max, but no change in bar speed. The bench press difference averaged about 1.6 kg (Mehus et al., 2025).
- Mean and peak bar speed did not differ between conditions.
- This measured single sessions in trained adults. It says nothing about joints, injury or long-term progress.
How much weight do elbow sleeves add to the bench press?
Twenty resistance-trained adults (19 men and one woman, averaging 24 years, 181 cm and 83 kg) attended the laboratory four times. On each visit they tested a one-rep max and then performed as many repetitions as possible at 85% of it. , 2025).
| Measure | With sleeves | Without sleeves | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bench press one-rep max | 104.8 kg | 103.2 kg | About 1.6 kg |
| Bench press reps at 85% | 5.2 reps | 4.1 reps | About 1 rep |
| Overhead press one-rep max | 66.0 kg | 64.0 kg | About 2.0 kg |
| Overhead press reps at 85% | 5.8 reps | 4.6 reps | About 1 rep |
| Mean and peak bar speed | No significant difference | No significant difference | None detected |
Why would a sleeve change how much you press?
The study measured performance, not mechanism, so the honest answer is that nobody demonstrated a cause here. Two explanations are commonly offered: neoprene stores and returns a little elastic energy as the elbow bends and straightens, and a compressed, warmer joint may change how the lift feels and how confidently a lifter commits to it. The finding that bar speed did not change sits awkwardly with a pure spring effect, which is worth noting rather than explaining away.
Are elbow sleeves worth buying?
That depends entirely on what you want them for, and the evidence only covers one of those reasons.
- If you want a slightly higher pressing number in training or on a competition platform where they are allowed, the measured effect was real but small — around 1 to 2 kg.
- If you want an extra repetition or so on your heavy back-off sets, that was measured too.
- If you want protection from injury or relief from elbow pain, this study did not measure that and neither does this page. Persistent joint pain is a matter for a qualified clinician.
- If you compete, check your federation's approved kit list before buying anything. Approved lists differ and they change.
A 1 to 2 kg difference matters at the very top of a competition total and barely registers in ordinary training. It is far smaller than the difference made by how you train over months: the load you use, how often you press and how you add weight over time.
What actually moves your bench press more than kit?
, 2021). Loading, practice and consistent progression are the levers that move a press by tens of kilograms, not by one or two.
Step 1
Press heavy often enough
Spreading your pressing sets across two or three sessions a week gives you more practice without exhausting any single session.
Step 2
Control your effort honestly
Stopping most sets with one to three repetitions in reserve keeps technique consistent and lets you repeat heavy efforts.
Step 3
Rest long enough between heavy sets
Longer rests between sets produced greater strength gains than short rests in trained men (Schoenfeld et al., 2016).
Step 4
Add weight in small steps
When every set is completed with good technique, add a small amount next time and record it.
Kit is one of several small questions lifters spend a lot of time on. How you order the loads within a session is another one that has been measured directly.
People also ask
How much weight do elbow sleeves add to the bench press?
In the one controlled trial that measured it, bench press one-rep max was about 1.6 kg higher with neoprene elbow sleeves than without, averaged across 20 trained adults.
Do elbow sleeves make the bar move faster?
No. The same trial found no significant difference in mean or peak barbell velocity between pressing with sleeves and pressing without them.
Do elbow sleeves help the overhead press too?
Yes, in that trial. Overhead press one-rep max was about 2.0 kg higher with sleeves, and roughly one extra repetition was completed at 85% of one-rep max.
Are elbow sleeves allowed in powerlifting competition?
Approved kit lists vary by federation and change over time, so check the rules of the federation you are entering before buying anything for a competition.
Will elbow sleeves stop my elbows hurting?
This research measured pressing performance only, not pain or injury, so it cannot answer that. Persistent joint pain should be assessed by a qualified clinician.
