Overhead tricep extension vs pushdown: which builds bigger triceps?
The long head of the triceps crosses the shoulder as well as the elbow. Raising your arm overhead stretches it, so overhead extensions train it in a longer position than pushdowns, where your arm stays by your side.

The short answer
Overhead extensions built more triceps muscle than pushdowns in a direct comparison. Over 12 weeks, total triceps size grew about 1.4 times as much with overhead work, and the long head about 1.5 times as much (Maeo et al., 2023). Pushdowns still build muscle, so a mix is fine, but make overhead work your main triceps exercise.
- Pushdowns still work. Use them alongside overhead work if you like them.
Why arm position changes triceps training
The long head is the biggest of the three, so how you train it affects overall arm size the most. Training a muscle in a stretched position is linked to more growth in several studies (Warneke et al., 2023).
Do overhead extensions build bigger triceps than pushdowns?
The study was in untrained people and was small. It shows a clear direction, but the exact size of the gap may differ in experienced lifters.
Best exercises for the triceps long head
- Overhead cable triceps extension, facing away from the stack.
- Seated or standing dumbbell overhead extension.
- Skull crushers, which raise the arm part of the way.
- Pushdowns as an extra, not your only triceps exercise.

Overhead extension technique tips
- Lower the weight until your elbows are fully bent behind your head.
- Keep your elbows pointing forward rather than flaring out wide.
- Use a weight you can control; the stretch is the point.
People also ask
Can I just do pushdowns?
You will still build triceps, but adding an overhead exercise is likely to build more.
Are overhead extensions better than pushdowns?
For triceps size, yes in the only direct comparison. Pushdowns still build muscle.
What is the best exercise for the triceps long head?
Overhead extensions, because they stretch the long head while it works.
Do overhead extensions hurt your elbows?
Some people find them uncomfortable. Try cables, lighter weights or a slightly different grip. If it hurts, swap the exercise.
